Should I be concerned they're trying to hide something?

My teenager wants to use a VPN. Should I be concerned they're trying to hide something?

Not necessarily - a VPN service has many legitimate reasons for teens. Valid uses: protecting privacy on school WiFi, bypassing overly restrictive school filters (legitimate educational content gets blocked), preventing location tracking by apps, protecting against cyberbullying (hides IP from harassers), learning about cybersecurity. However, have honest conversation about: what specifically they want it for, explaining VPN doesn't make them invincible or legal to break rules, still monitoring their overall screen time and behavior. I'm parent of two teens, we compromise: they can use Turbo VPN on family Premium account (I'm admin), I explain it protects them from hackers on public WiFi, we discuss which sites are actually dangerous vs blocked unnecessarily, trust but verify - occasional check-ins about online activity. VPN itself isn't red flag. Teens have legitimate privacy needs. Focus on building trust and teaching digital citizenship rather than surveillance.
